"The idea of an air bike was conceived as our energy resources are being depleted day-by-day and pollution level is rising" Keeping all this in mind A group of students from the Auto Engineering Department at the Guru Nanak Dev Polytechnic College in Ludhiana have invented an eco-friendly motorbike which runs on air-pressure and doesn't require fuel. have designed a 100cc bike which runs on air pressure technique.

Meet Akshdeep Singh, Balbir Singh, Bhoninder Bir Singh and Arshdeep Singh, final-year automobile engineering students of Guru Nanak Dev Polytechnic College (GNDPC), who came up with the unique endeavour as part of a project of their curriculum.

The 100 cc bike, which the students claim to be the world's first 100cc motorcycle powered by air and can help eliminate pollution to a great extent, is equipped with two compressed air cylinders, gives a mileage of 11 miles per hour, which the students have plans to increase with some changes in near future. The 100cc bike currently runs at a speed of 18km per hour, but the students hope to make it faster.

The main advantage of Air Bike:
• It is pollution-free as its exhaust is cold air.
•The Defense personnel can also use the bike, as thermal radiation cameras cannot detect it.
• The engine of this bike can work underwater and breathes air from its storage tank, which in turn sucks it from the atmosphere.

Akshdeep said they completed the project in nearly three months at a cost of about Rs 40,000. “All through its making, we never enjoyed Sundays or any other holiday. We used to work for more than six to seven hours a day after college,” he added. Ecstatic over their achievement, Balbir Singh, another student, said, “The entire world is crying over fuel crisis and pollution, so we decided to invent something which could be run without using fuel. We wanted to make something eco-friendly.”Arshdeep Singh, said, “We used an engine of 100CC in the bike. When we provide air pressure, the bike’s piston moves downward and it works. Likewise, Bhoninder Bir Singh, said, “We have set an example but many new features can be added to our machine. We were looking for some sponsors but nobody came forward.”

Many of us might question what is so special in these bikes. There are other eco-friendly bikes, which run on batteries. The answer is that a lot of time is spent in charging them. In an air bike, you just need to fill air through a compressor. We have proved that air pressure can be used to run a vehicle and now if any company approaches us, we would definitely like to share the idea. They said the sole aim of his life was to give a new definition to automobile industry.

Solar Energy to ward off Energy crisis

Ahmedabad, Nov 11 (UNI) Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi today said the countries that have surplus solar energy, should form a group and have a corpus fund to deal with energy crisis. ''This group which will mostly comprise of developing countries, can work together to save humanity from an energy crisis,'' he said while addressing a gathering at the inaugural session of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) here.

In a lighter vein, he said,''Poets and scientists alike are all after the moon and seems everybody is running away from the sun, which is a major source of energy.'' President A P J Abdul Kalam who inaugurated the session, welcomed his suggestion and said the PRL should take it up as a challenge and work on a solar cell. He said increasing the solar photovoltaic cell efficiency from the existing 15 per cent to 45 per cent using silicon as a base with Carbon Nano Tube is an important research challenge.

Mr Modi also said Gujarat has a 1600-km long coastline that should be effectively used and called upon scientists to come up with solutions for quakes and tsunamis as the state lies on seismic zone 5. He also lamented that today's generation was more oriented towards IT, medicine and other career options than pure sciences. He said if a survey is conducted among 100 students, hardly one or two would talk of science as a career.
'Scientists are like 'rishis' (sages) who are into 'sadhna' (penace). There's no glamour, no media publicity in science and therefore the youth today are opting more for IT.'' ''Thankfully, President Kalam is a scientist and we can hope that more and more people will emulate him and take to science,'' he added.

Twenty-eight-year old Rafi Alam in New Delhi has designed a two-wheeler that can run on both solar energy as well as wind power. It took Rafi two years to design this scooter and incidentally the final version was ready on the World Environment Day.

With his redesigned two-wheeler he seeks to provide a unique solution to the energy crisis as well as the problem of pollution as the scooter propels itself by using both solar energy and wind power.

The scooter is fitted with a few electrical gadgets and uses both solar and wind energy simultaneously to charge a battery that then runs the vehicle. The solar panel is installed on the front of the vehicle while a fan that delivers wind energy has been mounted on the front wheel cap.

“It's a button operated scooter. There is no mechanism involved and there is only one electrical circuit working. There is a solar panel which charges the battery and this drives the motor which in turn drives the scooter,” said Rafi Alam. For extreme emergencies, the scooter has a small petrol tank but Alam has also ensured that the battery keeps charging itself while the scooter is running on petrol so that the shift can be made after some time.

Once fully charged, vehicle can run between 80 to 100 kilometers at a speed of 50-60 kilometers per hour. As all the innovations come at a price this innovation too has a price tag of 934 US dollars attached to it.

With formal education only up to class IX, Rafi is currently working as a supervisory mechanic at a car workshop in Delhi. Rafi does not want to limit his creativity to scooter only. He wants to replicate the technology on four-wheelers too.
Environment Has An Impact On Fertility

Chennai : Believe it or not, the environment around you has an impact on your fertility. Chemicals, toxins, and pesticides could find their way into one's system and wreak havoc on the fertility, especially among the males.

This was the starling findings of a study done by the Fertility Centre at Kovai Medical Centre and Hospital, Coimbatore. The study conducted by the centre with a sample size of 200 males, drawn from urban and rural areas of the district, revealed that environmental hazards could contribute to infertility among men.

The study demonstrated as how environmental hazards and chemicals, especially cadmium could cause infertility in men, Director of the centre and Consultant in Reproductive Medicine, Dr C V Kannaki Uthraraj told UNI.

"After ruling out genetic and hereditary factors, we found that pollution, caused by chemicals and pesticides were the major cause for infertility among men," she said. It was more shocking that the pollution related infertility was prevalent even among rural men, who were not exposed to any major environmental hazards.

A closer look, however, revealed that handling of pesticides by them could be the reason for this, she said, adding unlike many other toxins, pesticides are well known to cause health and reproductive problems. The study also proved that cadmium level was very high in 200 km radius in the district.

The centre proposed to undertake a bigger study with the help of a sponsor "to look deeper" and find whether the problem was widespread, throughout the state.

With her concept, based on age-old wisdom of utilising waste, Poonam Kasturi has also set up a Daily Dump Company. It designs products and services that manage home waste.

It has a lot to do with how people perceive this. How Indian housewives actually look at waste.

Today,this young entrepreneur is a big a success due to her earthware pots and concept is catching up.

Poonam said: “We didn't want to use a factory production system to produce this specific product. If you want to start something, it has to be really simple. It has to fit and the whole thing of garden and terracotta and even the material is also very good for taking compost."

These attractive earthenware pots, punched with holes for aeration and one set atop another. The Organic compost is filled in the topmost pot and then interchanged as the bulk of the garbage matures and declines.

The units need to be stirred at least once within three to five days. Maintenance involves using natural 'Neem' spray to mask any odour and the addition of an organic culture to accelerate the decomposition process.

A full cycle may take up to two months or more for significant decline in volume. Daily Dump offers service support and information on knowing and segregating home waste. Future cars may run on eco-friendly algae fuel

Cars of the future might run on eco-friendly fuel that is produced by photosynthesis in algae. According to a report in New Scientist, the fuel produced with the help of algae is an emerald-green crude oil, which could fuel cars, trucks and aircraft without consuming crops that can be used as food.

“This product can go right into today"s oil pipeline," said Jason Pyle of Sapphire Energy in San Diego, California, which developed the fuel. Pyle said that the “green crude" is similar in quality to naturally occurring crude oil. It is produced as a by-product of photosynthesis by a genetically engineered strain of algae, housed in tanks of treated waste-water and exposed to sunlight.

The tanks can be placed on non-arable land. Gasoline, diesel and jet fuel have already been refined from the green crude, and the company aims to produce 10,000 barrels per day within five years.

Recycling rubbish could do more harm than good to the environment, a new research has revealed. RMIT environmental engineering expert Tim Grant was quoted by news.com.au as saying that when it came to recycling consumer electronics such mobile phones, computers and TVs, "the net (benefit) of recycling them was negative (for the environment), but throwing them away is equally damaging.

While most experts agree that recycling plastic bottles and glass jars does less damage than burning or putting them in a landfill, the recycling process has environmental costs. David Moy from the Waste Management Association of Australia used the example of rinsing out a glass jar before placing it in a recycling bin.

"The approach I would take to that is to not use fresh water to rinse out, but put them on the sink and wash them at the end of your washing up. "That gives you a clean product, without adding (that) environmental cost. But there’s also an environment cost with transport: using carbon fuels and building the vehicles."

Dr Sami Kara, an expert on the total environmental impact of consumer products at the University of New South Wales, said the recycling process has many unknowns, and that "it is almost impossible to answer" questions without going into the subject in detail.

"These are issues related to type of product, collection networks, distance, volumes, recycling techniques, land fill cost, etc. "They all play a critical role," he said.

Can you imagine a car being propelled by a fuel created from parts of discarded computers? Well, a team of Romanian and Turk researchers believes that it may just be possible someday.

And the force behind their belief comes from a recycling technique they have developed to convert parts of discarded computer circuit boards into environmentally friendly raw materials for use in consumer products.

Cornelia Vasile at the Romanian Academy at Iasi and her colleagues wanted to devise a way to remove toxic materials from waste electronic scrap so that such material could be safely recycled. They collected printed circuit boards from discarded computers, and employed a special combination of catalysts, high temperatures and chemical filtration to destroy flame-retardant additives in the plastics.

The process enabled the research team to remove almost all the toxic substances from the scraps, and generated oils that could be safely used as fuel or raw materials called feedstocks for a wide range of consumer products.

"It is good work. The recycling of scrap printed circuit boards is becoming increasingly important because some of the metals they contain are becoming increasingly scarce," Live Science quoted chemical engineer William Hall at Coventry University in England, who did not participate in this study, as saying.

He said that the novel method would have to demonstrate its advantages over the current recycling process of smelting if it was to succeed commercially. According to him, the benefit of this new technique "is that as well as recovering the metal content of the printed circuit boards, you can also recover the valuable organic chemicals."

"The biggest obstacle to development of this technology is the scaling-up of the process," he added. A research article detailing this work will be published in the May 21 issue of the journal Energy & Fuels. It will cut the length of the road trip from Shanghai to Ningbo, a busy port, by 120 km. A former computer programmer has developed a process by which waste cooking oil can be converted into a fuel which can be used to run diesel-powered cars. The newly developed fuel has far lower levels of harmful emissions than traditional fuel and also cheaper.

According to the Scotsman, Alexander MacDonald, using a simple process, converts old cooking oil into bio-diesel that can go directly into the fuel tank of any diesel-powered car.

The newly developed fuel has far lower levels of harmful emissions than traditional fuel, and at 96 pence a liter, is also cheaper. For collecting the cooking oil that would otherwise be thrown away, MacDonald visits about 100 restaurants in Glasgow.

He uses it to make about 4,000 liters of bio-diesel a week, and has built up a dedicated band of about 200 customers, including taxi drivers, HGV drivers and regular motorists.

"You get two types of customer; people who are concerned about their carbon footprint and people concerned about their pocket," he added. MacDonald learned to convert cooking fat into bio-fuel in his kitchen while he was working as a computer programmer.

"My kitchen was my laboratory but my partner wasn't too happy about the smell, so I got kicked out to an industrial unit," he said. He saw the business potential, and since being made redundant 18 months ago he has never looked back.

But the first time that he put the bio-diesel in his van, he was terrified about what would happen. "My heart was in my mouth. I was expecting it to explode or to just stop, but it just went on and on and on," he said. MacDonald has now driven 30,000 miles in the van, all powered by bio diesel. OneIndia

The "green" vehicle, a 1998 Dennis Dart vehicle converted for the scheme, is beginning a six-month trial in Bristol to see whether its performance can match that of conventional coaches. As well as being a near carbon-neutral fuel source, bio diesel made from waste cooking oil can produce less carbon monoxide when it is burnt.

The bus is powered by bio-diesel from waste cooking oil sourced from several local restaurants. The operator has also appealed to passengers to "chip in" by donating their own waste cooking oil to local recycling centres.
